Medal of Honor Allied Assault

Medal of Honor represents the absolute best that action-packed, event-driven shooters have to offer. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, the first PC installment of Electronic Arts’ WWII-themed shooter series, is superb. However, if the realistic setting has led you to expect a serious combat simulation along the lines of Ghost Recon or Operation Flashpoint, you’re going to be surprised and perhaps disappointed. Medal of Honor is first and foremost a run-and-gun shooter–a really, really excellent run-and-gun shooter. A lot of clever scripting and precisely orchestrated mayhem lend it a sustained intensity that more open-ended tactical shooters often lack. Relatively short but very dense, it’s like one-half game and one-half amusement park ride.

Frontlines Fuel of War

The gameplay focuses on a central mechanic, the frontline. This is designed to keep the action in one place, by focusing objectives closer together on the battlefield. The frontline also has bonuses. By moving it back and forth across the battlefield, the player may gain or lose weapons and equipment. The frontline mechanic will be used in all gametypes, which forces players to choose which objectives they will pursue or defend, adding a strategic level to the gameplay.

Enemy Territory Quake Wars

Quake Wars is a class-based, objective focused, team-oriented game. Teams are based on human (GDF) and alien (Strogg) technology. While the teams are asymmetrical, both sides have the same basic weapons and tools to complete objectives. Unlike other team-based online games (such as the Battlefield series), the gameplay is much more focused on one or two main objectives at once, rather than spread all over the combat area. This allows for much more focused and intense combat situations, similar to the original Unreal Tournament assault mode.

The Mark

The Mark
The Mark wants to be like a Hollywood-style buddy movie–in this case, a US Marine and a British mercenary who must team up to stop London from being nuked by terrorists.
It’s a fairly generic but passable plot device, but the game manages to get everything else wrong.
The plot itself is overly contrived and makes no sense.

Call of Duty 4

Call of Duty 4

The only real catch is that the single-player is almost shockingly short. If you’ve been keeping up with this style of game, you’ll probably shoot your way to the credits in under five hours. While you can raise the difficulty to give yourself more of a challenge, the main thing this does is make the enemies frustratingly deadly, which sort of detracts from the fun.
