Seven years ago, I first gazed upon the final incarnation of Capcom’s Street Fighter II legacy - Super Street Fighter II Turbo. I was only 14 then, and my only exposure to this game was getting my ass beaten by those who were 250 times better than me in the arcades, not to mention the ultra-beefed computer opponents.
I never really progressed too far in the game and felt it was too overwhelming. The idea of taking on another twelve fighters from around the world (after battling them over and over in Street Fighter II, Championship Edition, Turbo and the original Super Street Fighter) in super-turbo speed (with the added pressure of performing super combos every round before you or your opponent gets mauled) kind of discouraged me from dropping the quarter into the machine. ALthough there were home versions of this game (very few though - like the PC version, complete with poor controls), nothing could really bring me back to the Street Fighter II universe - until this game arrived. Super Street Fighter II X Revival is most likely the LAST incarnation of Street Fighter II on any system, and this time it’s come courtesy of the Game Boy Advance.
Like all the other Street Fighter games before it, the premise is simple - you’ve entered a world-class tournament, and you must beat the mess out of all your opponents until you reach the last boss beat the stuffing out of him. After all the blood, sweat and tears, you get to see some story. It’s weird how nowadays you expect to have some kind of plot development even in the simplest of fighting games. I’ve played through this game a good 20-30 times by now (in the course of 4 or 5 hours) and I can’t believe that someone can go through 12 straight matches without one word of dialogue, besides the standard victory speeches. Sure, I have done it, 20-30 times even… but I’m different. (NB: by now I’ve played it a good 600-900 times, and it still is no different for me.)
The gameplay is damn-near identical to its arcade counterpart. The main difference is that instead of your usual six-button layout, there is a pseudo six-button layout utilizing the same solution used for SF conversions to older less-than-six-button consoles: one or more of the attacks are doubled on a button. For example, the B-Button by default is a medium punch when depressed, and a light punch when tapped. This may be the one smidgen of proof that pressure-sensitive buttons did not debut on Playstation 2 (touchй, Sony!). The D-Pad sensing is very tight, and moves can be pulled off with some ease. Even on Turbo-3, you can execute lighting fast moves and small combos without a frown. The game is all fight, with 12 action stages and two bonus stages (the barrels and the car) to take your mind off your next victim. After all the battle is over, there are two extra modes, “Survival” and “Time Attack” to challenge your speed and skill.
Capcom seriously went back to the drawing board and created some fresh new stills for this game. The graphics are clean and make the GBA screen look like a sheet of paper. The in-game graphics have been accurately reproduced for the small screen, and the super-finish has been given a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 style 3-D tunnel background. The endings were re-done in a still pseudo-cinematic style, with text overlaying a beautifully drawn graphic.
